Webinar-Human Consequences of Immigration Policy: An Update from the Field

In July, the administration announced its latest and most dramatic plan to stop people from seeking asylum in the United States. Known as Asylum Ban 2.0 or the “transit ban”, the policy denies everyone—including children—the legal right to seek asylum in the U.S. if they traveled through any other country to reach our border without first applying for asylum in that country. The asylum ban follows on the heels of the “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forces asylum-seekers to remain in Mexico while their cases are being considered in the U.S. This policy puts tens of thousands of families and children in harm’s way as they wait in unsafe communities, often living on the streets where they are vulnerable to kidnappers and traffickers, while they wait for a chance to tell their stories. At the same time, immigration officials continue to forcibly separate hundreds of children from their parents at the border, despite a court order that should have ended nearly all separations. Each of these policies impacts the children we serve.

On Tuesday, December 10th at 12:00pm CST (1:00pm EST) Young Center Staff Attorneys Upasana Khatri, Mariana Alvarez, and Jena Gutierrez and Senior Policy Analyst Mary Miller Flowers joined a webinar to speak about how these policies have changed our work and what we’re doing to fight back. You can view the webinar below and access the transcript here.
