Standing Together to Protect DACA

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in a group of cases that challenge the Trump administration’s decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. In highly anticipated oral arguments, the Court will consider whether it has the ability to review that decision and if so, whether the decision to end DACA and put nearly a million youth and young adults in jeopardy of deportation, was lawful.

This case matters to every person at the Young Center. The young people at the heart of this decision are part of our professional community. They may be members of our families and are most certainly part of our community of friends and loved ones. This is our fight.

Earlier this fall, to lend support to this legal challenge we joined an amicus brief organized by ally organization United We Dream, the largest youth-led, immigrant movement in the country. You can read this beautiful testament to the warriors among us or watch their stories as told in the first ever series of video-briefs.

On Tuesday, Young Center staff will leave their desks to stand in solidarity with DREAMers around the country. We are proud to join those gathering in front of the Supreme Court in Washington, D.C. The rally will include advocates who marched for more than two weeks from NYC to the Supreme Court as part of the Home is Here Campaign.

Tuesday is one more day in a long, protracted fight to protect part of a much larger community we serve and support every day. The Supreme Court has the power to upend the lives of roughly 700,000 DACA recipients, our community members, friends, and families. If the Court rules that ending DACA is lawful, DREAMers will be left vulnerable to deportation. The Court will not issue a decision until sometime next year, which gives advocates time to prepare for any number of outcomes in the case. In the meantime, we will continue to fight back against the administration’s attacks on children and young people.

You can join us by participating at a rally in your community, sharing DACA stories including the ones in the amicus brief we’ve joined, and mobilizing your networks to take a stand with DREAMers on Tuesday and beyond.
